The Enugu State Police Command has said that an 84-year-old man, identified as Mathias Uzo, from Ezere in the Awgu Local Government Area of the state, has committed suicide.
A statement on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, said the incident occurred on November 29, 2019, when the deceased was allegedly found hanging on a tree in the community.
It was gathered that the octogenarian had gone missing for three days before his body was found hanging in a tree in a nearby forest.
A community source said, “The man, Uzo, went missing on Wednesday, November 27, a situation that prompted family members to form a search party on Thursday.
“Initially, the family members thought that he had gone to see one of his daughters married outside. But, when the daughters were contacted, they said they didn’t see him. That was when a search party was constituted to search for him and on Friday, we saw his body hanging in a tree.”
In another development, the command has arrested one Emeka Ogbonna of Umueze in the Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state for the alleged murder of one Emmanuel Ede-Ngwu of the same community.
A statement by Amaraizu indicated that Ede-Ngwu had gone to separate a fight between the suspect and his wife on November 25, 2019, and the suspect started chasing him with a stick to get out of his compound.
Amaraizu said, “Unfortunately, while Ede-Ngwu was running away, he allegedly fell into a well inside a neighbour’s compound.
“He was later rescued from the well and taken to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku/Ozalla, for medical attention and was later confirmed dead.”
Amaraizu added that the Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Abdurrahman, had directed that a thorough investigation be carried out on the two incidents.
