Ado-Ekiti- The Ekiti State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Mrs. Emmanuella Okpongete has made a passionate appeal to host communities on the need to treat corps members as their own wards. She pointed out that the scheme has helped in peaceful co-existence among youth in the country,adding that the issue of ethnicity and tribalism have been reduced through the NYSC scheme.
The state coordinator stated this on Thursday while speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the 1,734 corps members deployed to the state for the 2018 Batch B Orientation course at the Permanent Orientation camp, Ise-Orun/ Emure local government area of the state. Mrs. Okpongete disclosed that the Orientation course became necessary for the corps members to be able to understand the objectives of the scheme and equip them with the required skills that would prepare them to face the challenges of the service year and the years ahead.
“You would agree with me that the NYSC scheme is the singular institution in this country of ours that has done so much to curb the menace of ethnicity,sectionalism and tribalism. “For this reason, we plead with our host communities to please see and treat the corps members as one of their own. We plead with you to protect these vulnerable Nigerians who have come from far and near to serve in Ekiti state.”
Speaking at the ceremony,the state governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose noted that the scheme has impacted positively on the psyche of Nigerians and had contributed immensely to the development of the rural areas through various community development projects embarked upon by successive corps members. Represented by the commissioner for Information, Hon.Lanre Ogunsuyi, Fayose admonished corps members deployed to the state to see the call to national service as a call to sacrifice, dedication perseverance and humility. ”
Ekiti Government places high premium on the youth,therefore the corps members deployed to Ekiti state will be engaged to drive agricultural development in the state. These will turn the indices of unemployment in the land. ” In the absence of white collar jobs, you are encouraged to go into agriculture businesses of farming,fishing, snairy and others. Ekiti state is rich in farmland, I enjoined you to embark on mechanized farming,” the governor advised. Fayose promised to the government’s continued support to the scheme in the state especially in the areas of provision of more infrastructures in the camp for it to be more conducive.
